Most travelers spend so much time planning where to stop that they forget to think about what they'll eat. That's a mistake. The Hana Highway has some of the best roadside food in Hawaii, and when you're traveling in a fully equipped campervan with a working kitchen on board, your options go well beyond whatever happens to be open when you roll through.

Stock Up Before You Leave Paia

Paia is the last real town before the Hana Highway begins. Once you pass Haiku and the road starts winding, grocery options essentially disappear until you reach Hana town — about two and a half hours in. Stock up here before you go.

Mana Foods in Paia is one of the best natural grocery stores on Maui — excellent produce, local fruit, prepared foods, and snacks. It's worth spending 20 minutes here loading up the fridge in your van before you hit the road. Pick up fresh fruit, grab some local snacks, and get anything you'll want for breakfast the next morning if you're spending the night at Wai'anapanapa or Kipahulu.

Best Food Stops Along the Hana Highway

Coconut Glen's (Mile Marker 27.5): A legendary roadside stop in the rainforest serving organic, dairy-free coconut ice cream in fresh coconut shells. Cash only. The line moves fast. Don't skip it.

Halfway to Hana Stand (Near Kaumahina): A small roadside stand selling banana bread, fresh fruit, and drinks. The banana bread is made fresh and sells out — stop early if you want some.

Aunty Sandy's Banana Bread (Keanae): The most famous banana bread stop on the highway, right in the Ke'anae Peninsula near Ke'anae Uka. Fresh out of the oven, sold by the loaf. If it's there, buy it.

Hana Fresh Market (Hana Town): A small farm stand in Hana selling local produce, prepared foods, and fresh juices. Great spot to restock the fridge in your van before heading further south toward Kipahulu.

Braddah Hutts BBQ (Hana Town): A local plate lunch spot in Hana. Simple, filling, and exactly what you want after a morning of hiking and driving. Portions are generous and the food is honest.

Cooking in Your Campervan Along the Way

• Breakfast at the campsite: Eggs, fresh fruit from Paia, toast, coffee. Simple and satisfying before an early start on the highway.
• Lunch on the road: Stock sandwich ingredients or wraps so you can pull over at a scenic viewpoint and eat without needing to find a restaurant.
• Dinner at Kipahulu: Pasta, rice dishes, or anything that cooks in one pan. Kipahulu has no water or food facilities on-site — your van kitchen is essential here.
• Snacks all day: Fresh pineapple, local chips, and whatever banana bread you picked up along the way.

What to Know About Food Access Past Hana

Past Hana town, food options essentially disappear. The road south toward Kipahulu passes through remote terrain with no stores, no restaurants, and no services. If you're camping at Kipahulu or Wahi Na'nea, everything you need for dinner and breakfast needs to be in the van before you leave Hana town. This is one of the biggest practical advantages of traveling in a fully equipped campervan versus tent camping — you're completely self-sufficient.
